A brand dedicated to celebrating couples? Sounds romantic, doesn’t it? I think so too. Yesterday marked the much-anticipated opening of the first the Kooples flagship store in Africa and they chose none other than the Mall of Africa to make their debut. It was my first time visiting The Mall of Africa since it opened its doors on Thursday, 28 April 2016. The overcrowding, rumours of stampedes and alleged criminal activity kept me at bay. However, this does not concern me. I’ve lived in South Africa long enough to know that the opening of something as significant as Mall of Africa will draw large crowds and unfortunately large crowds stem as an opportunity for criminals.
The event took place after hours, once the dust from daily visitors had settled. We were greeted with a warm welcome from the Zebra Square team who provided us with wristbands before we entered the entertainment area. Waitors worked the room with platters of salmon, caviar, medium rare steak bites, French champagne and so much more. The catering seemed fitting; the Kooples is a French clothing brand after all, even Maps Maponyane tossed in a few French words as he welcomed the crowd as the MC for the night.
Founded in 2008 by three French brothers, the Kooples has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. With 110 stores worldwide and over 300 points of sale in 8 short years, you simply cannot ignore them. As stated in the New York Times “the Kooples fashions itself as an outfitter of romantic partners who enjoy dressing like each other”. They seem to be masters when it comes to genderless fashion and the notion of borrowing from your boyfriend’s closet. The evening was concluded with a live performance from South African music group Mi Casa and a giveaway to the most stylish couple.
